Rain forest-clad mountains and Mayan temples and extreme sports attract travelers to the interior, while diving, snorkeling, fishing and kayaking beckon on the islands. Fortunately, Belize is small enough that you don’t have to choose one or the other. You can design a “surf and turf” itinerary even if you’re there for only a week. All international flights arrive in Belize City, but most v....More..

The Beautiful Swiss Riviera!
I’ve just returned from another wonderful trip to the Swiss Riviera, and I am more certain than ever of my belief that this is the finest region of Switzerland. Having been in 23 of her 26 cantons, I think I know the old girl (die Schweiz, or la Suisse) pretty well, and I can confidently say that this region has it all. For a summertime trip, you won’t find a nicer place in all of Europe to spend your hard-earned vacation time and your ever-dwindling dollars. The area called t....More..

People-Watching on Geneva's Promenade
I’ve just returned from yet another trip to Switzerland, and I’m happy to report that it’s still there, and still one of the most fascinating destinations in Europe. Unfortunately for Americans, the current weak dollar means that it’s even more expensive than usual. In my book, Open Road Publishing's Switzerland Guide, you’ll find some tips for getting the most out of your Swiss Francs. And fortunately, Switzerland’s main draws are her incredibly beautiful mou....More..

The worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in
In 23 years of active travel, I’ve covered the range of accommodations from near the top to near the bottom. I’ve stayed in 5-star Swiss hotels (usually when an employer was paying the bill), no-star dumps from Mexico to Morocco, youth hostels and campgrounds all over the Continent, and mildewy motels at highway exits all over Europe and the States. I’ve even pitched my sleeping bag on a beach a few times. So it may be a bit of a surprise that the lamest place I every stayed wa....More..

Open Road's Best of Northern California
has just won a Merit Award for Best Travel Guide in the 2008 North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA) Awards. Congratulations, Elizabeth Borsting! The book covers San Francisco, Napa and Sonoma, the Central Coast, Santa Cruz, the Mendocino Coast, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe and the High Sierras. This follows her award last year from the same outfit for Runner Up in the Best Travel Guide category for Open Road's Best of Southern California.

The 4th edition of our Eating & Drinking in Paris, just released, received a great mention today in The Wall Street Journal.  Author Andy Herbach's unique book, already praised by The New York Times, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, chef Tyler Florence, and many others, was discussed in an article about how it's sometimes difficult to find a great meal in Paris. With Andy's book, however, not only will you find a wonderful place to eat – but you'll have the additional benefit of knowing what you're eating and how to order it in French!
