Mirror Lake Inn: An Adirondack Gem!
This summer we're staying in the US for our August vacation. In fact, we're not even leaving New York State. It's not a staycation at home, though; we're heading north to the high peaks of the Adirondack Park.  We've chosen to stay at the Mirror Lake Inn, one of the top resorts in the entire Adirondacks.  Click the link above for the inn's website.

This report is a teaser; I'll blog in much more detail after we return home with our post-trip report.

The inn (main entrance above) is located in Lake Placid on Mirror Lake, one of several lakes in and near the town. The town and the entire high peaks regions of the Adirondacks boast great restaurants, terrific shopping, and tons of year-round activities, from hiking to skiing, boating to tennis, golf, and much more.

The resort looks incredible, and the attention to detail in the rooms and suites are second to none.  Below are a few photos from some of the gorgeous rooms:

Many of the rooms overlook the lake and the mountains; some have balconies, fireplaces, whirlpool baths, and more, and all have amenities like plush terry robes, color TV and DVD players, beautiful bed linens, magnifying makeup mirrors, and more!

The resort's spa is world-renowned. Betty is looking forward to trying out their Signature massage, which features something called a Dry Float Soft Pack System. Personally, their Adirondack Maple Sugar Body Scrub sounds tastier, but what do I know?

For you outdoor buffs, the inn offers hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, biking, horseback riding, and all sorts of guided tours.  Take out a canoe, relax at their indoor or heated outdoor pool, or hit one of the nearby rivers and do a little fly-fishing!

We're looking forward to doing an early morning wilderness canoe trip. Depending on how ambitious we are, perhaps we'll engage in some yoga classes on the lake as well (or, like the duck in the photo below, we'll watch from a safe distance)!

We're really looking forward to getting up there to begin our trip north! I urge you to consider booking a stay at Mirror Lake Inn either this summer or really any time of year; in fact, the inn is just as well known for their wonderful winter activities!

And now, here's a final pic that I think defines Adirondack serenity:

BIG NEWS:  Beginning this week and running for the next six weeks, we'll be feautring short "Best Of" lists from some of our books on a great new travel website called Ruba. This week they're featuring three Best Of lists from Open Road's Best of Costa Rica:  one for surfing, one for bird-watching, and one for volcano-trekking.  Take a look and let us know what you think.

Open Road's Best of Northern California
has just won a Merit Award for Best Travel Guide in the 2008 North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA) Awards. Congratulations, Elizabeth Borsting! The book covers San Francisco, Napa and Sonoma, the Central Coast, Santa Cruz, the Mendocino Coast, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe and the High Sierras. This follows her award last year from the same outfit for Runner Up in the Best Travel Guide category for Open Road's Best of Southern California.

The 4th edition of our Eating & Drinking in Paris, just released, received a great mention today in The Wall Street Journal.  Author Andy Herbach's unique book, already praised by The New York Times, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, chef Tyler Florence, and many others, was discussed in an article about how it's sometimes difficult to find a great meal in Paris. With Andy's book, however, not only will you find a wonderful place to eat – but you'll have the additional benefit of knowing what you're eating and how to order it in French!
